Cataract Surgery
A cataract is a hardening of your lens which presents with gradual loss of vision. Cataract surgery can eliminate the need for spectacles or decrease spectacle independence depending on which intra-ocular lenses you choose Please note that there are lenses that Dr Gerber can implant that eliminates
the need for reading spectacles, but the medical aid does not fully reimburse these lenses. He will discuss this option with you during your consultation. Please note that cataracts are a “prescribed minimum benefit (PMB) condition” and therefore by law needs to be covered by your medical aid.
Cataract surgery is a routine day procedure in hospital that takes about 20minutes to perform. The cataract is softened with a probe that emits ultrasonic sound waves and is then aspirated. An artificial Intraocular lens that is calculated to your specific visual needs is then implanted in your eye. Dr Gerber has done extensive research and tested all the Intraocular lenses and he therefore only uses the best quality lenses on the market.
The incisions performed during cataract surgery are constructed is such a way that no stitches are inserted. Dr Gerber will review your eye 1 day after surgery after which he will prescribe reading glasses that you will use for 1 month. Following this period, he will refer you back to your optometrist for refraction.
